The element of surprise can get played out quickly, but in the right place and time it's magic.
Take mashups -- they're my favorite thing. I am obsessed with the practice of taking something that people know and love and translating it into something that other people can see and feel in a new way -- sometimes a better way, even, than the original! A way that continues the converation instead of rips it off and tries to pass it off as your own. Love it.
That's what's up with bardcore, which takes classic rap and turns it into Olde English. It's what I'm listening to today while I work. A person couldn't do it daily, but it's a fun change of pace.
